SandStorms hold annual referee development clinic
A record crowd of 17 people attended the annual SandStorms Referee clinic held at the Rotana Centro Hotel in Barsha last January 13th from 9:30 to 3:30. 12 of the attendees were rookies. The clinic was lead by referee-in-chief, Eric Koeman. During the session, the rookies were taught the basic fundamentals of how to be a hockey referee, which includes positioning on the ice, signals, infractions and how to call penalties. All attendees also completed an IIHF rules test. The rookie referees will now be scheduled to work with a senior referee on their first few assignments as a way to learn the on-ice mechanics during Novice and Atom games, while our experienced referees will receive supervision support during Pee-Wee, Bantam and Midget games as a way to develop their skills on the ice. We wish to thank all attendees for participating so enthusiastically.
We also recognized our two yearly awards for 2016 to the following referees:
Referee of the Year - Ethan DeBruyn
Ethan graduated from level 1 to level 2 last year and was even offered to work several games in the EHL as a linesman and performed extremely well especially in tournaments.
Rookie of the year - Bradley Ismail
Bradley has demonstrated a great attitude to learn on and off the ice and was always available when needed. He has great potential for the years ahead.
Well done to both of you!
